When buying windows, it’s critical to measure accurately to ensure a good fit. Measuring windows correctly is important whether you are buying online or in a store. And while there are many advantages to buying windows online, you are responsible for measuring correctly to ensure a good fit in the end.

Methods for Measuring Windows

Determining the process to measure for your new windows depends on whether you’re installing windows on a new home or if you are replacing existing windows.

How to Measure for Windows on a New Home or Construction

Whether you’re building a new home or constructing an addition on an existing structure, you’ll be starting from scratch. In most cases, the architect will define the window sizes and the builder will frame the rough openings based on the specified window sizes. You can use the architect’s specifications (the window schedule) as the basis for your order.

If you don’t have window sizes specified and have to go off the rough openings, the process is pretty simple as you’ll be measuring the framing while it’s still easily accessible. Follow the following steps:

  1. Measure the size of the rough opening (the inside of the wood framing around the window).
  2. Subtract a ½ inch from the height and width.
  3. Choose your profile system, layout and opening of your windows, colors and material to customize how you want your windows to look.

How to Measure for Replacement Windows

When replacing existing windows, there are a few additional steps to take since you’ll be working with a preexisting frame. Follow these steps to measure accurately for your replacement windows:

  1. Take the existing molding off to view the framing around the windows. We recommend using a molding pry bar to remove the window molding to avoid damaging your drywall. If you pull the molding out straight, it will be easy to put them back on right after you complete your measurements.
  2. Measure the width of the window from the inside jamb from the left to the right. Then measure the height from the top inside jamb to the bottom. You should always measure your windows in two or three different places—i.e. measure the top, bottom and middle for the width—to ensure you get an accurate measurement since some windows have a slight angle in the frame.
  3. Take the smallest of your measurements for both width and height and Subtract a ½ inch from the width and height. That will be the number you use when configuring your window.
  4. Once again, choose your layouts, style, colors and materials to customize your windows.
  5. Get an instant price for your windows, choose your quantity and purchase!
