Window Replacement Cost: What Moves the Price

By 24/7 WindowStore3 min read

"How much do replacement windows cost?" has an honest answer, and the honest answer is "it depends." That's true and not much help. So here's what it depends on, in order of how much it moves the price, so you can predict the number before you configure a window.

Start with the window

As of October 2026, our Mezzo replacement windows start from $625. Mezzo is our flagship replacement line, and $625 is the starting point: the least expensive Mezzo setup we sell, not a quote for your windows. Everything below is how you get from that number to yours.

1. Size, and why it moves in steps

Window pricing is banded by united inches, which is width plus height, in inches. A 36" × 40" window and a 40" × 36" window both come to 76 united inches, so they cost the same.

Sizes are grouped into bands rather than priced one inch at a time. Stay inside a band and a slightly larger window costs the same. Cross into the next band and the price steps up. So when you're deciding on a size, check what the next size up and the next size down do to the price before you settle on one.

2. Options, and why they scale with size

Options such as tinted or tempered glass aren't flat add-ons. Many are priced by the size of the window, and some by area or length, so the same upgrade costs more on a large window than on a small one. If you're adding one option across a dozen windows of different sizes, expect a different amount for each.

3. Color

White is the base color. Beige and clay are available on many models for an upcharge that grows with the size of the window. Where a model offers other finishes, they're priced as options on top, and what's available varies by model.

4. Glass and performance

Glass choices and performance upgrades also affect both the price and the ratings. We explain what the numbers mean in U-Factor, SHGC and ENERGY STAR, Explained. One spoiler: "Triple Strength" glass is not triple-pane, and it isn't an energy upgrade.

What the price covers, and what it doesn't

The price you see is the price of the windows. Installing them is a separate cost, whether you do it yourself or hire a contractor, and our installation overview shows what the job involves. Windows are collected from a pick-up location you choose at checkout, so factor in how you'll get them home.

A worked example, without the arithmetic

Say you're replacing eight windows: six similar double-hungs and two large ones for the living room. Here's what to expect.

  • The six similar windows should price alike, because they sit in the same size band.
  • The two large ones will likely land in a higher band, so each costs more before you've added anything.
  • Every option you add costs more on the large pair than on the six.

The easiest way to see it is to configure one window at the size you measured, note the price, and then change one thing at a time: size, color, glass. Watch what moves. After two or three tries you'll have a feel for it that no price range could give you.

Prices change, and the configurator is the source of truth

Prices can change when our supplier's price list does. The $625 above is a snapshot from October 2026, and the number in the configurator is the one that counts. Because every window is made to order and all sales are final, check the size and options before you order. Our measuring guide will help with the size.

Frequently asked questions

How much do replacement windows cost?

It depends on the size, color, glass and options you choose. As of October 2026, our Mezzo replacement windows start from $625, which is the least expensive Mezzo setup we sell. The configurator shows the price for your exact configuration.

What are united inches?

United inches are width plus height, in inches. Window pricing is banded by united inches, so a 36" × 40" window and a 40" × 36" window both come to 76 united inches and cost the same. Because sizes are grouped into bands, the price changes in steps rather than inch by inch.

Do options cost the same on every window?

No. Many options, such as tinted or tempered glass, are priced by the size of the window, and some by area or length, so the same upgrade costs more on a large window than on a small one.

Does the price include installation?

No. The price is for the windows. Installing them is a separate cost, whether you do it yourself or hire a contractor. Our installation overview shows what the job involves.
